Dr Joanna Roberts

Consultant psychotherapist

Over 25 years experience providing evidence based psychological therapy

Based in mid Sussex I have over twenty five years of clinical experience working in the N.H.S. and educational settings, and more recently in the private sector, with a wide range of psychological difficulties. These include mood and anxiety disorders, interpersonal difficulties, work and stress, childhood trauma, grief, relationship issues, insomnia and eating distress. I have also worked extensively with chronic illness and pain..

Having completed full postgraduate training in several therapeutic models I am fully accredited with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP), the Association of Cognitive Analytic Therapy (ACAT) and am an approved provider for Nuffield Health/Vitality. More recently I have completed parts 1 and 2 of EMDR training with Sandi Richman.

I offer a warm and supportive space in which to explore long-standing emotional distress or more recent difficulties such as loss and transition, relationship breakdown, or work-related issues. By working collaboratively and creating together a ‘map’ of how the difficulties have developed and are being maintained, the therapy facilitates new insights into unhelpful patterns and can help you to explore alternative, healthier ways of living.

I also provide clinical supervision, training and consultancy. Please contact me for further details.

At our initial meeting we will explore your difficulties in depth and agree which approach is best for you and most likely to achieve your goals.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected and that negative thoughts and feelings can trap you in a vicious cycle. You're shown how to change these negative patterns to improve the way you feel. It is most commonly used to treat anxiety disorders and depression but can be useful for other mental and physical health problems. See www.babcp.com for further information.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a powerful and unique, evidence-based, psychotherapy which helps people recover from problems caused by traumatic events in their lives. It is recognised by the World Health Organisation and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). For more information please see  emdrassociation.org.uk

Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT)
CAT brings together understandings from cognitive psychotherapies (such as CBT) and from psychoanalytic approaches into an integrated, effective therapy. It looks at early experiences and lifelong patterns that are causing you problems in your life, focusing chiefly on your relationships, including the relationship you have with yourself. It is generally a longer term therapy than CBT. You may have a history of feeling chronically stressed or depressed, experience difficulty in looking after yourself properly and unsuccessful or broken relationships. See www.acat.me.uk for further information.

Counselling
I deliver person-centred counselling and if we choose this approach, the sessions will be less structured and offer you the chance to explore issues in your life in a non-judgemental and safe environment. The therapy is based on the belief that every human being strives for and has the capacity to fulfil his or her own potential. It can be both brief and longer term depending on your needs.

"I have had a real problem with anxiety which interfered with my studies and social life. The therapy offered me a chance to talk about what was bothering me in a safe place and to take practical steps towards tackling my problems. I now feel I have the strategies to help me cope better".

"Joanna is excellent. She is very approachable and kind. This was my first experience with a therapist and I must say that all of my nervousness and reservations were easily put to rest after my first session with Joanna. She really helped me out. All I can say is that I am so grateful that I saw her because she managed to help me with an issue I have been dealing with for many years. I felt extremely comfortable with her and every time I left the session I always felt positive and happy".

Female, 38

"Joanna was lovely. She has a nice personality and made me feel welcome and supported. I feel I can manage my low mood and worry much better now having talked things through with her. I have now developed new ways to cope and generally feel much more positive".
